The International Workshop on GenAI and Software Engineering (GEN-SE 2026)
GEN-SE 2026 is organized with the 2026 International Conference on Next Generation AI Systems (NGEN-AI 2026), taking place on 1–4 September 2026 in Trento, Italy, and online over Zoom.
The workshop focuses on the relationship between generative AI and software engineering: using generative AI to support software development and coding, and engineering reliable, maintainable, secure, and trustworthy generative and agentic AI systems.
Generative AI for software engineering and software engineering for GenAI systems
GEN-SE 2026 invites original submissions on the use of generative AI, large language models, and agentic AI techniques in software engineering, as well as software engineering methods, tools, architectures, and processes for building and operating generative and agentic AI systems.
Scope
Generative AI is rapidly changing how software is designed, implemented, tested, documented, maintained, and evolved. AI coding assistants, LLM-based development tools, and autonomous software engineering agents are increasingly used to support code generation, code review, debugging, testing, requirements engineering, architecture design, documentation, DevOps, and software maintenance.
At the same time, generative and agentic AI systems introduce new software engineering challenges. These systems require careful attention to architecture, evaluation, quality assurance, reliability, security, traceability, human oversight, lifecycle management, governance, and integration into existing software ecosystems. GEN-SE welcomes work that studies both sides of this relationship: generative AI for software engineering, and software engineering for generative and agentic AI systems.
Submissions should clearly describe the problem being addressed, the proposed method, tool, framework, dataset, empirical study, or experience report, and the contribution to software engineering research and practice.
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to
- Generative AI and LLMs for code generation and code completion
- AI-assisted software design, architecture, and modelling
- Generative AI for requirements engineering and software specification
- AI-assisted testing, test generation, debugging, and fault localization
- LLM-based code review, refactoring, and software maintenance
- AI agents for software engineering tasks and development workflows
- Human-AI collaboration in programming and software teams
- Empirical studies of AI coding assistants and developer productivity
